About the Festival

The Bermuda Plein Air Festival is organised by the Plein Air Painters of Bermuda, which comes under the umbrella of the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard, a working gallery with four studio artists located at the very western end of the island.

This week-long event, the second of its kind in Bermuda (we held the first event in 2015), has come about as a result of the local plein air painters wanting to share the beauty of this island gem with fellow plein air aficionados worldwide. Long a source of inspiration for such renown artists as Winslow Homer, Georgia O’Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, Henry Moore and many more internationally acclaimed artists. The island has much to offer those with a love of colour, contours, texture and atmosphere. Please come and join us in our new adventure!

Check-In for the Festival Events

There will be a check-in desk available at the Coco Reef Hotel from 4 to 7 pm on Saturday, 11 November. There will also be a check-in desk at the Welcome Cocktail Reception at the Coco Reef Hotel that evening from 6 to 7.30 pm. For those arriving a little later, check-in will be available for one hour at the start of each Paint-Out Session.

Check-In comprises having all your painting surfaces stamped on the reverse side for authentication, ensuring all your registration documents are in order, that we have all your preferences for the event, and providing you with your name badge and relevant transportation and social event tickets. Please have your name badge with you at all times, as this will establish your right of access to participating private estates, social events, transportation, and special offers at selected restaurants.

Participants will also be able to have canvases and paper stamped at the start of each paint day.

Collection of your pre-ordered painting supplies and/or frames will be available at the Welcome Cocktails Reception at the Coco Reef Hotel. If you will not be able to attend this reception, please contact us at 1-441-234-2809 to make alternative arrangements for the collection of your supplies.

Transportation in Bermuda

Travel to and from the airport is easy – there are always taxis at the airport and at the hotels available for your use. We do not cover this cost, nor make any arrangements for the transfers. A taxi fare from the airport to either of the South Shore hotels is approximately $40. (15% tipping is customary.)

We are able to provide transportation to and from painting locations that are off the beaten track, and to and from the various social events, as indicated in our Programme – but only if pre-arranged. This will be by taxis, private cars and/or buses, depending on the demand. This transportation is included in the Festival Hibiscus Registration Package, or it can be purchased as an add-on to the Bermudiana Registration or the Student Registration Packages. If you are a local participant, the cost of transportation is deducted from the Festival Hibiscus Registration Package, since you will probably have your own mode of transport.

Transportation pick-up and drop off will only be at the Coco Reef Hotel, as arranged.

This year, Bermuda has micro cars available to rent. Click here for the link to the Current Vehicles website for full details.

Plein Air Paint-Out Sessions

Our Programme gives details of the various locations selected for our daily paint-out sessions. Please note that start times vary, as we take into consideration our painting location and the Bermuda “morning rush hour” and/or social events following on from our painting hours.

Most of our sessions will encompass the lunch hour – on two days, when we are far from restaurants, we are happy to supply a box-lunch, if pre-ordered. On other days, when we are in the vicinity of cafes, restaurants or grocery stores, we leave you to your own devices!

As several of our painting locations are on beautiful private Bermuda properties, you will be required to show your Festival badge to gain access – please do not forget to have your badge with you every day.

Should the weather let us down on any occasion, we have a selection of alternative sheltered locations available. You will be informed of the new location should the need arise.

Dinner Events

We are delighted that we are able to offer you the opportunity to have dinner at two private homes, courtesy of their welcoming hosts. These are included in the Deluxe Registration Package, as is transportation there and back to the hotels. Tickets for either/both dinners can also be purchased as add-ons to the Festival or Student Registration Packages.
